6600 homeless people were tallied in the city of chicago. the volunteers filled this west side warning center ready to count heads of the homeless in chicago especially when temperatures dipped like they have in recent days on a night like tonight you don't need a temperature gauge to tell you it's cold outside everywhere you look signs of just how frozen the city feels in almost two years people dressed for the deep freeze this couple from l.a. wisely prepared for the worst. this is a chicago we are fortunate we don't have earthquakes, we don't have

floods we don't have tornadoes i will take this a few days of winter any time. this he says is far from the worst he has seen. the worst was probably january of '82 where two weekends in a row it went down to 28 lowe, 31 below into the wind chill was more than biting.below 31 below and the wind chill was more than biting. post men and women are working through it. at night city workers and volunteers tried to steer the homeless shelters but the endgame of course is something much greater. the goal of the administration is not to have someone in a homeless shelter for one night but to get them out of the shelter and move them into permanent housing. help them through the things

confusion said and went no instructions were given the city ordinances requiring that buildings built after 1975 have a p.a system built-in but this building didn't have the safety requirements build and place it was built before 1975. if there is one bright spot david martin told us about it, firefighters rescued his pets from the eighth floor including seven months old oreo. they were able to save everything and my dog so i may very lucky and last person. i am a very lucky and the last person.the blastblessed person. two

police officers supposedly wrongfully killed a chicago man and taunted his relatives right afterwards with racial slurs. >> a fatal police involved shooting an outrage crowd of onlookers and now a lawsuit the family claiming that officers at the scene repeatedly used the n wordf.. star with an armed it started with an armed robbery. police say after a very violent encounter an officer shot and killed him in a crowdand a crowd quickly gathered to the scene at 55th and ashland. >> i asked what happened, he smirked, he shrugged his

shoulders and said it's just another [expletive] dead. >> they shot him in the back, not once but twice. they filed a federal lawsuit today against the city, the police department for the officers alleging this conduct, some officers are hurled racial slurs as the crowd of onlookers crew, angry about his debts. we called the police officers over 20 times and they never told me where my brother was. >> some people refuse to leave the scene, five men ended up charged with mob action after throwing bricks at police cars.

they are appealing to the mayor to step in. i see very little difference between the jim crow of the 1950's and 60's here on the streets of chicago where police officers on a daily- weekly time. are shooting young black men that they claim have guns and then there are no weapons found. >> no matter what race you are every citizen in chicago deserves to be treated with respect by the police including me. >> he did have an extensive criminal past, he left behind a fiancee and a young child, chicago police would not comment on the lawsuit. a spokesman says that this case remains under investigation. >> chicago police say they have taken nearly 450 firearms off the streets just in the first three weeks of the year, during mccarthy showed some of the

weapons seized today he said more than 180 guns were recovered in the two towns alone. it illustrates the need for tougher gun laws and he says that four times as many firearms have been seized in chicago then in new york city which he says have much tougher gun laws. >> a dog stranded, rescuers working to save it from icy lake michigan. >> someone spotted the black dog at 730 this morning scampering on the ice at jackson harbor of the 55th and lake shore drive when they got there they watched him for a little bit checking out his m.o. he ran up and down the ice getting very close to open water but not close enough to fall into the frigid lake. he wouldn't come close to shore

government money be used for abortions? should parental consent required? should late term abortions be allowed?? it has since been amended to include cases of rape and incest. illinois also passed a lot in the mid-90s requiring girls 17 and under to notify a parent prior to an abortion. an estimated 50 million legal abortions have occurred since the ruling although there has been a steady decline tougher state laws have forced many abortion clinics out of business. in illinois is 93 percent that has no abortion providers. the law deals with
